The Hammer Drill (Output) Gears – shown on left – are the top and bottom of the same item – a magnificent PM application.

This part is complete as-sintered except for hardening and grinding upper counterbore. RPM‘s multi-platen compacting equipment produces this four-level cross-sectional part with its two external gears, its splined inside diameter, deep upper counterbore and lower counterbore in one operation at several hundred each hour.

In material savings alone – where 1.33 pounds of steel are used to complete a fully machined part – only 0.371 pounds of PM steel are needed for the pressed and sintered PM part – an obvious and significant cost saving. Machining this part from bar stock requires at least 16 operations to complete. PM requires only four, which includes the heat treatment and grinding.
